My grandmother could do many things such as calligraphy, flower arrangement, and sign language, and I always looked up to her. When I was a child, I often traveled abroad for tennis tournaments. At that time, I could not speak English well, but I enjoyed meeting people from other countries and learning about their cultures and traditions. As I grew older, I wanted to communicate with more people, and this feeling connected with my grandmotherโs interest in sign language. That became my reason to start learning it.
Later, I found out that in Japan, there are Starbucks stores that employ deaf people. I also learned that the Deaflympics will be held in 2025 and that tennis will be one of the sports. This made me even more interested.
In the future, I want to use my tennis experience to provide sports equipment to many people. By โmany people,โ I mean not only people without disabilities, but also people who are deaf, people with visual problems, and people with difficulties using their hands or feet. I want to help make a society where everyone can enjoy sports and challenge themselves in their own way. So, I started to advocate for the idea of 'Sign Connects People.'

About Me
My name is Haru Nakayama, and my given name โ้ฝโ (meaning โsunโ) was chosen by my parents with the hope that I would always be smiling at the center of people, like the summer sun. When I was six years old, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor and experienced severe pain that made me realize the fragility of life. From that moment, I decided to devote myself wholeheartedly to the things I love, because tomorrow is never guaranteed.
One of the things I loved most was playing with my father, and my first dream was to beat him in tennis. That goal led me to start training seriously, and through this journey, I came to admire Shingo Kunieda, the Japanese wheelchair tennis player who became world number one. His story showed me that tennis is not limited by disability or circumstance. This inspired me to ask, โCan people who cannot hear also play tennis?โ When I researched, I discovered the Deaflympics in Japan. Through this, I realized the importance of sign language and began learning it, understanding that sports have the power to connect people beyond physical differences.
My dream now is to share the joy and excitement of sports with as many people as possible. In the future, I hope to work in the business of tennis equipment, helping players and fans experience the sport in meaningful ways. To achieve this, I want to study in the United States, a country known for its strength in business and marketing. I believe that by learning there, I can gain the skills and perspective to inspire more people to find happiness through tennis and sports in general.
The experience of overcoming illness taught me to live with passion and commitment, and tennis opened the door to a wider world. With these values, I am determined tocontinue learning, working hard, and building a future where I can contribute to both sports and society
